Bayelsa Governor’s Aide Condemns Ebilade Ekerefe Over Alleged Insult at Political Rally

The Technical Assistant to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Ogidi Ben Bara, has publicly condemned Mr. Ebilade Ekerefe for allegedly insulting Governor Douye Diri during a rally held on Saturday in Yenagoa. The event was organized by a group known as the “New Associates.”
Hon. Ogidi criticized Mr. Ekerefe’s conduct at the rally, describing the comments directed at Governor Diri as highly disrespectful and inappropriate. He emphasized that while citizens have the democratic right to support political figures of their choice, it is unacceptable to use public platforms to attack the governor’s person.
Reports from the rally indicate that Mr. Ekerefe referred to Governor Diri with unprintable names during his address to attendees. This behavior sparked outrage among members and supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State. Hon. Ogidi stated that the youth wing of the PDP would not tolerate any form of verbal abuse or public insult directed at the governor.
Speaking further, Hon. Ogidi clarified that he does not oppose political expression or freedom of association. However, he warned that using political gatherings as a means to launch personal attacks against elected leaders could incite political unrest and undermine the state’s peaceful environment.
Hon. Ogidi stressed the importance of political actors maintaining respect for constituted authority regardless of personal grievances or political affiliations. He urged all political groups and individuals in Bayelsa to focus on issue-based discussions rather than resorting to insults and character defamation.
The governor’s aide also encouraged young politicians to engage in constructive political activities that would enhance the progress of Bayelsa State. He advised them to avoid promoting discord and hatred, which he warned could derail the state’s ongoing development efforts.
He reiterated the PDP’s commitment to democratic principles but made it clear that the party would not condone any behavior that disrespects the office of the governor. Hon. Ogidi called on political stakeholders to uphold the values of decency and decorum in their public engagements.
Observers described the “New Associates” rally as poorly attended, with many labeling it a failed event. Despite the low turnout, the remarks made by Mr. Ekerefe have continued to draw widespread condemnation and discussions within the Bayelsa political scene.
In response to the controversy, supporters of Governor Diri have demanded a public apology from Mr. Ekerefe. Some have also called on security agencies to investigate the remarks made during the rally to prevent any escalation of political tension.
Governor Douye Diri, elected in 2020, has focused his administration on promoting peace, fostering unity, and investing in infrastructure development across Bayelsa State. His efforts have been recognized by various groups, who credit him with maintaining relative political stability in the region.
The incident at the Yenagoa rally highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining respectful political discourse in a highly charged environment. Leaders and observers alike are calling for restraint and a renewed focus on constructive political engagement to safeguard the progress achieved under the current administration.
