Bayelsa Health Commissioner Calls For Regular Checks

****Says Heart Disease Responsible For Sudden Death
TRACKING____As the world marks the 2020 World Health Day, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Pabara Newton Igwele has urged Bayelsans to regularly check their heart.
In a statement in Yenagoa to mark the Day, Igwele explained that there are several heart diseases which are the major causes of death worldwide, but hypertension is most prevalent in this part of the world.
According to him, hypertension is no respecter of age and therefore, it is crucial that everyone knows how healthy their hearts are at every given point.
The Commissioner noted that stroke and sudden death is caused by cardiovascular diseases and not by spiritual attacks as some may think, and advised that a blood pressure (BP) check be done at least once a week to detect and treat any heart condition before it escalates.
He said, “Today is World Heart Day and on behalf of Governor Douye Diri, I want to implore Bayelsans to know their health status as heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in this environment.
“We advise that you check your BP regularly because some risk factors are modifiable, such as diet and exercise. However, it is advised that a doctor recommends the exercise, to avoid doing rigorous exercises with elevated blood pressure.
“Non modifiable risk factors such as race, sex, age, and family history cannot be changed therefore it is imperative that we leverage on the modifiable risk factors and protect our heart.
The Health Commissioner added that symptoms of hypertension include throbbing or severe headaches, restlessness and dizziness.
He further advised that when such symptoms are noticed, medical attention be sought immediately .
Dr. Igwele equally advised that as much as people seek a livelihood, they should make their health a priority so that they would be alive to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
