YENAGOA______13th February, 2020, the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Justice Inyang Ekwo’s judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja and nullified the election of Chief David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress in the 16th November, 2019 Bayelsa State Governorship Election.
The decision of the Court was on the prayers of the PDP candidate, Douye Diri that the APC Deputy Governor-elect, Degi Eremienyo submitted false academic information to the INEC in his form CF001.
Recall that the judgement of the Supreme Court came few hours photos of the then governor-elect, Chief David Lyon, rehearsing to take salute on inauguration day at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex flooded the internet.
The rehearsal was reportedly cut short when the news of the Supreme Court’s nullification of his election was heard.
There was tension and apprehension all-over Yenagoa, as the jubilation of PDP was greeted with the violent protests of supporters of the APC, chanting war songs and setting fire on major government buildings, including the building housing the Secretariat of the PDP, and looting of properties of private individuals.
However, calm was restored and Senator Douye Diri of the PDP who was the first runner-up in the election as declared by INEC was then sworn-in as Governor of the state on the 14th of February, 2020 as pronounced by the judgement of the Supreme Court.
