Buhari allowed herders to carry AK47 to kill my people but did not allow my people to use AK47-Ortom
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of complicity in the clashes between herders and farmers in the state. During an appearance on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, Ortom expressed his belief that the federal government, including President Buhari, has been complicit in the manner in which herders have been killing people in Benue State. He stated that he had personally discussed these issues with the president and other federal authorities.
Ortom specifically highlighted the disparity in the weapons used by herders and local communities. He criticized the fact that herders are allowed to carry AK-47 rifles, while the local people and Community Volunteer Guards are limited to pump-action rifles, which are less effective. According to Ortom, this imbalance puts the local communities at a severe disadvantage when trying to confront armed herders.
The governor further emphasized that the herder attacks in his state could have been curtailed if the president and the federal government had granted his request to allow his people to use AK-47 rifles as well. He argued that the herders’ ability to carry automatic weapons while his people were restricted to less powerful firearms perpetuated the ongoing clashes between the two groups.
