A caregiver in Illinois has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting and impregnating a severely disabled woman at the facility where he worked. Isaiah Fields, 23, committed the crime against a 43-year-old resident with Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder that severely limits cognitive and physical abilities.

The abuse occurred between August 1, 2023, and September 5, 2023, at the Marklund Hyde Center, a facility that serves individuals with disabilities. The victim, who had been living at the center since her early 20s, is unable to read, write, talk, or stand. Prosecutors emphasized that due to her condition, she could not have given consent to any sexual activity.

The crime came to light when the woman was taken to a hospital for liver and gallbladder issues. During the examination, doctors discovered that she was at least 31 weeks pregnant. The following day, she gave birth to a baby boy due to complications from preeclampsia. The infant was placed in neonatal intensive care but died after 11 weeks.

Authorities conducted a DNA test on the baby, which confirmed Fields as the father. This evidence led to his arrest and prosecution. He pleaded guilty in January to aggravated criminal sexual assault.

During his sentencing in Kane County court, Fields attempted to apologize to the victim’s family, stating, “There is no reason or set of experiences that could justify hurting anyone in any way.” However, his actions were condemned by prosecutors, who stressed the severity of the crime.

Prosecutor Matthew Rodgers acknowledged the tragedy of the baby’s short life but pointed out that his birth helped bring justice. “The baby didn’t live long in this world,” Rodgers said. “But simply by coming into this world, he did justice for his mother.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Fields will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release. Rodgers stated that the conviction ensures accountability for Fields and justice for the victim, her family, and the Marklund community.

“This was a despicable act,” Rodgers said. “While no sentence can undo the harm caused, today’s outcome ensures that the defendant will be held accountable.”
