The news of the positive Covid tests comes on the heels of the injury-ruled out of the tournament of star forward Thembi Kgatlana.

According to the Safa website, team doctor Rodney Mokoka confirmed that a team official tested positive for Covid-19 before the match against Burundi.

“We had one official who tested positive before the Burundi game [in the tournament’s group stages].” The official was isolated and treated because she was symptomatic, according to Mokoka.

“We also had one player who tested positive for Covid-19 48 hours before the Botswana game, and she was also symptomatic.” She was placed in quarantine and treated as such. Her asymptomatic roommate, who tested negative, is in isolation, so they both missed Botswana.”

More tests will be performed on the squad before the match on Thursday.

Bayana Bayana won all of their group stage matches, including the opener against nine-time champions Nigeria, to earn nine maximum points. Soccer fans and analysts alike have speculated that the two countries may meet again, possibly in the finals.
