CP orders investigation into death of man killed by police teargas

The Commissioner of Police, FCT command, Benneth Igweh has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department,CID, to commence an immediate investigation into the death of an Abuja resident, Onyebuchi Anene.
A statement on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, for the command, SP Josephine Adeh, said it was it was a case of accidental discharge of the officers weapon.
AllNews.ng reported that Anene met his untimely demise after he was shot in the face with a teargas canister by a police officer in Abuja.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, along Arab road Kubwa, Abuja.
According to a friend of the deceased who preferred anonymity, during the altercation between Anene and the bikeman, the police on patrol came and directed both of them to follow them to the police station in Byazhin, Kubwa.
However, both men refused saying they had already settled the matter and as such, there would be no need to go to the police station.
In the course of the argument, one of the policemen shot Anene at close range and he was reportedly rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, but was referred to National Hospital, Abuja, where he was pronounced dead.
The statement read: “In response to the tragic and unprecedented incident that resulted in the untimely demise of one Oyebuchi Anene ‘m’ of Byazhin Abuja on May 22, 2024, at about 9:45 PM, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, directed the DC Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased.
