The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that Edo State ranks as the second highest state in Nigeria for convictions related to financial crimes.

This disclosure was made by Effa Okim, the Zonal Director of the EFCC in charge of Edo, Delta, and Ondo states, during a visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City.

Expressing concern over this statistic, Okim stated that it was not a positive reflection on the state’s citizens and residents. He emphasized that Edo, with its rich history, should not be synonymous with high levels of criminality, especially in financial crimes.

Okim highlighted the prevalence of cybercrime, commonly known as ‘yahoo yahoo,’ which has reportedly led some young individuals to resort to ritual activities, even involving their own parents. He noted that such criminal activities not only undermine the culture and tradition of the Nigerian state but also reflect poorly on the societal values.

The EFCC official emphasized the need for parents to take more responsibility in guiding their children away from criminal activities. He also expressed the commission’s readiness to collaborate with the media to reduce the visibility of crime, particularly cybercrime, perpetrated by underage individuals.

Furthermore, Okim warned against the public display of wealth, such as spraying money, stating that it fosters a mindset among teenagers that wealth can be acquired through any means. He indicated that the EFCC would enforce laws against accessory to crime to deter individuals from supporting criminal elements.
