Defection: APC ‘zonal spokespersons’ call on Saraki to step down
TRACKING>The Conference of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Publicity Secretaries (CAPS) has urged the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to step down from his position.
The senate president, formerly the third most powerful official in the APC administration, on Tuesday evening announced his defection from the party to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his former party.
His defection is believed to have led to that of the APC’s publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, Mr Saraki’s known loyalist.
CAPS said it believes Mr Saraki, ”now a member of the minority political party” can no longer act in the capacity as senate president.
It made this known in a statement made available by APC’s assistant director of publicity, Edegbe Odemwingie, on Thursday.
It equally hailed the appointment of the new Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, who has taken over from Mr Abdullahi in acting capacity.
“Considering the recent movements of politicians across the different political parties and particularly the defection of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki from APC to PDP, CAPS observes that it is within the rights of Saraki to choose where to pitch his political tent.
“However, CAPS calls on the Senate President to resign from the position immediately. We believe that Bukola Saraki, as a member of the minority PDP, has lost the moral ground to continue as the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the group said.
CAPS while wishing Mr Abdullahi well, also said Mr Nabena is a good fit for the slot of the party’s spokesperson.
The statement was signed by members of CAPS from different zones.
These include Yahaya Bashir (North-west), Taiwo Olatunbosun (South-west), Usman Adaji (North-central), Senibo Chris Finebone (South-south), Sule Garba (North-east), Okelo Madukaife (South-east) and Joe Igbokwe (Chairman).
