Deji Adeyanju reveals those being targeted in 2023 as regards naira redesigning

Deji Adeyanju, a popular socio-political activist, said on Tuesday that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) redesign of the naira was aimed at opposition political parties.

With elections just around the corner, Adeyanju claims the CBN policy makes it difficult for the opposition to move money.

However, the Abuja-based activist told Track News that the policy would boost the economy.

When asked if the new policy would reduce vote-buying in the 2023 elections, Adeyanju replied, “No, it will not.” Politicians always find a way to get around these issues.”

He also called those who hoarded the naira “heartless animals.”

“Heartless animals refused to help the poor,” Adeyanju says, “but Emefiele forced them to bring out all the money.”

“The redesigning of the naira appears to be aimed at opposition political parties because once money is put into the system, the government determines how much you can get out of it.”

“Yes, it’s a fantastic idea for boosting the economy, and given that so many looters have physical cash in their hands, we can now see how wise the CBN was to take such an initiative.”

He did, however, warn against rushing to implement the new policy, which goes into effect in December.

Adeyanju suggested that the CBN delay implementing the new policy until after the 2023 elections.

“I don’t see the urgency and spread so close to the election.” It is even preferable for the CBN to demonstrate goodwill by allowing the policy to take effect after the election, so that it is not perceived as a political move.

“This will demonstrate transparency, as well as the fact that they are not targeting anyone and are not willing to be used as a willing tool by the incumbent party against the opposition.”

“It’s a good policy, but the CBN should wait until after the elections to mop up and release the new notes,” he added.

The CBN had planned to release the redesigned naira notes on December 15, 2022.

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, stated that N100, N200, N500, and N1000 notes would be redesigned and released.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, says it is monitoring the residences of three state governors in the aftermath of the apex bank’s announcement.

The EFCC believes the governors kept cash in their homes.
