Details of meeting between INEC Chairman and Peter Obi’s legal team emerges
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday assured the Labour Party’s legal team of the Commission’s readiness to provide all documents the party requested to prosecute its case at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
TrackNews had reported that the 60-man legal team of the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday met with INEC officials.
The meeting which was held at the Commission’s national headquarters in Abuja is to commence the process of inspection of electoral materials used for the disputed February 25 presidential election.
Addressing the Labour Party’s legal team, Yakubu said “INEC has nothing to hide”, promising that the Commission will be transparent to all aggrieved parties.
“INEC has nothing to hide. Documents available at the headquarters will be given immediately,” Prof. Yakubu said.
“We are meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) today and we will discuss how other documents at the state level could also be made available to you speedily.”
It would be recalled that the Court of Appeal granted leave to Obi and the Labour Party to have access to all the sensitive materials used by INEC in the last presidential election.
The former Anambra State governor said he is challenging the process by which INEC got the results that were announced. Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the president-elect on March 1.
