Dickson commends Nigerian Navy for curtailing maritime crime

TRACKING>>Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday commended the Nigerian Navy for reducing maritime crime in the state waterways. This was as a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, quoted the governor for lauding the efforts of the Navy, when he visited the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas yesterday.

The governor, he added, stressed that the efforts of the navy had gone a long was in curbing the maritime crime such as piracy, kidnapping, crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other related crimes in the water ways. According to the governor, the state water ways are now the safest in the country mostly due to the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Navy. Dickson also praised the Chief of Naval Staff and the leadership of the service for the exemplary conduct of naval personnel during the last general elections in the country, saying:

“The naval personnel carried out their sensitive security responsibilities during the elections with strict adherence to their terms of engagement, professionalism, integrity and indeed a high display of competence.” Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, in his remarks, commended the governor for providing the requisite support to the Navy to aid the performance of its duties in the maritime sector, adding that the Navy would be encouraged to do more in curbing maritime crime with support from geographical locations benefitting from its services. The Naval chief, who also pointed out that there was indeed a sharp drop in insecurity in the maritime sector due to the support and sustained efforts of the Navy, however, warned against illegal crude oil refining, and theft of crude oil in view of the effects on the environment.
