Edo police killing: We’ve identified suspects, says police chief

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, has said the command has gotten some of the names of those who carried out the dastardly act at the Benin airport that led to the death of an officer in Benin.
Inspector Onuh Akoh was shot by thugs who unleashed mayhem on those who went to receive the former deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu while returning from Abuja yesterday.
He disclosed this while reacting to the killing of an officer in Benin.
CP Adegboye said after thorough investigations of the names of those currently with the command, those who are found guilty will not be spared but will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Adegboye denied having any intelligence report on any attacks on anybody nor was there any premonition that such a thing was going to happen because everyone was dancing and jubilating at the airport.
“There was no intelligence report but all we could say was that there were a lot of supporters. Nobody gave intelligence reports that something was going to happen. I was at the airport to see things for myself and with my men and to ensure that law and order was maintained. No single incident within the airport. People were dancing, happy until after the airport premises,” Adegboye said.
The police boss who said the police were saddened by the ugly incident of losing one of their personnel, warned political gladiators in the state to play the game according to its rules and should stop dragging the police into it.
“It is unfortunate we lost him. It is a very preventable issue. It is very avoidable. I want to appeal to all our gladiators and political actors, if we had played the game according to the rules, the ugly incident would not have happened. This time around, I am talking to our political gladiators generally irrespective of party affiliations including their supporters.
“It is a simple thing, if there is a court case, this has to be pursued to a logical conclusion in the court. This is to make the job of the police simple.
“Our job is simple if our political gladiators want us to make it so. You have a judgment and you have another judgment, whatever, please, pursue it in the court.
“It is not the duty of the police to now say, go and enforce. The court will direct the Balif to enforce most judgments. It is the duty of the police to protect the Balif for the safety of the Balif and the instructions will come from the appropriate quarters,” CP Adegboye added.
