ASUU speaks out about when the strike will end as the union meets with the government.
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUUnational )’s president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated on Monday that the union would meet with the Federal Government today (Tuesday).
The union and the Federal Government are meeting, according to Osodeke, to discuss the union’s demands, which prompted the strike.
The ASUU President stated that the decision of the Federal Government would determine the next step in the union’s strike.
Osodeke stated on Channels TV that if the Federal Government agrees to ASUU’s demands at the meeting, the strike will be called off.
“The strike will be called off if we go into that meeting tomorrow and the government says, what you’ve bargained for, we’re willing to sign,” he said.
This follows Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, blaming the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ongoing ASUU strike.
The ASUU is on strike, according to Keyamo, because of a 2009 agreement signed by the PDP-led government with the union.
Keyamo went on to say that ASUU went on strike 12 times for a total of 900 days between 1999 and 2015, when the All Progressives Congress took power.
