Ekiti 2026: Oni withdraws from partisan politics, endorses Oyebanji’s re-election

Former governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni, has officially announced his withdrawal from active partisan politics.
Addressing journalists at his residence in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ido-Osi Council Area, ahead of his 70th birthday, Oni emphasised that his decision to step back is not driven by immediate political ambitions but by a desire for a more reflective and less active role in politics.
Oni, who ran for the governorship of Ekiti State on July 18, 2022, under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), confirmed that he is no longer affiliated with any political party.
“For now, I’m not interested in rejoining any party or running for office again. The future is unpredictable, but for the moment, I am stepping back from active politics.”
Despite his withdrawal from formal party politics, Oni stated that he remains open to offering advice and support to individuals and groups as needed.
Turning his attention to the current governance of Ekiti State, Oni commended the present governor, Biodun Oyebanji. He praised Oyebanji for his leadership style, noting that it has successfully bridged the gap between the government and the people, more effectively than during his own tenure.
Oni thereafter endorsed Governor Oyebanji for a second term. He expressed his belief that Oyebanji’s leadership has been beneficial for Ekiti State and indicated that his endorsement is based on Oyebanji’s achievements and leadership qualities.
“If my endorsement contributes to his chances, then so be it,” Oni said. “I am willing to support him, and if there is anyone who can match his achievements, I am open to considering them. For now, I believe Oyebanji has done well enough to deserve another term.”
