Ekiti varsity, ASUU disagree over resumption
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has disagreed with the university management over the resumption of academic activities.
The university, on Monday, directed students and staff to resume on May 24, for continuation of the 2020/2021 academic session. But ASUU distanced itself from the resumption date, insisting that lecturers were part of the nationwide strike declared by its national body, and were not ready to abandon the cause except the strike is suspended.
A joint statement signed by ASUU Chairman Kayode Arogundade and Secretary Olawale Ogunwale, directed members to disregard the notice of resumption but comply fully with the national body’s directives.
The statement reads: “It is hereby affirmed that ASUU-EKSU branch is in full compliance with the national strike that has just been rolled over for the next 12 weeks from May 8.
“The Vice Chancellor’s instructin that all academic staff should resume should be disregarded as it negates our current struggle as a union.
“ASUU-EKSU executive members were reliably informed that Visitor to the University has mandated the Vice Chancellor to reopen the university in the next 24 hours or forfeit his job.
“ASUU EKSU insists that mandating the re-opening of the university is purely political and we are not ready to attend to the demands of the university.”
