The death of Nigerian artist Mohbad, real name Ilerioluwa Aloba, on September 12, 2023, continues to be shrouded in mystery as the cause remains unknown.

Despite a coroner’s inquest at the Ikorodu High Court, the autopsy results were inconclusive due to the decomposed state of the body.

African Television and the African Foundation for Justice have announced a N50 million reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of Mohbad’s killers. Larry Omodia, CEO of African Television, expressed sadness over the inconclusive autopsy results and emphasised the need for closure in Mohbad’s case. “We have been told at the courthouse the cause of death is unascertained meaning the cause of death is unknown. Meaning this could be the mystery of all mysteries in Nigeria,” Omodia told newsmen after the court hearing.

He praised the efforts of the Nigerian police force in investigating the matter. In his exact words, “In support of what the police are doing, African television is announcing officially that together with our partners, we are raising 50 million naira for anyone with information that leads to the conviction of whoever eliminated or killed Mohbad. You can take this globally. We know somebody somewhere knows something.”

Omodia stated this at the Ikorodu High Court after the coroner inquest hearing where vital witnesses were cross-examined including Primeboy, the deceased close friend, and the pathologist who conducted the autopsy. The report revealed that the cause of death was unascertained due to the decomposing condition of the body.

“To put an end to this mystery, African television and African Television Foundation for Justice is raising this 50 million naira for anybody; Police officer, market women or gatemen, if you know something or anything that may have caused the death of Mohbad, contact us, we guarantee you, we will raise N50 million for you and you will be taken abroad for safety,” he stated.

“African television came into this movement, creating a foundation to ensure that the freedom of the press in Nigeria is not suppressed. In the quest to find the perpetrators, journalists and bloggers are being arrested, Arifa and Veron, two popular bloggers are currently sitting in police custody.

We came in asking for DNA. We promised 10 million naira to do the DNA of Mohbad’s son.”

In addition, the foundation has taken a step further in offering free DNA for every child in Nigeria. ” in collaboration with our partners in Belgium, UK, and Malta we made an agreement that anyone that wants DNA for their child can contact us. I encourage Nigerians to join in the movement. We are also organising a Sing For Mohbad tribute concert coming up in September to keep Mohbad name alive,” Omodia said

Explaining the implication of the autopsy report, Prof. I.O Smith SAN, told newsmen that the report is not up for discussion yet, and the pathologist will be recalled for proper questioning after they have studied the autopsy report as they agreed with the Coroner to apply for a copy. When asked if the autopsy report which says the cause of death is unknown will mark the end of the case, he said, “The report is one out of several pieces of evidence. It is not over, the next hearing will be on June 25. We have direct evidence, we have circumstantial evidence among others.”

Mohbad’s lawyer, Wahab Shittu SAN highlighted the reasons the autopsy failed to determine the cause of death, he said the pathologist mentioned the body’s decomposition as a major reason the cause of death was unascertained. “When you said the cause of death cannot be ascertained it is suspicious. It is not clear.

“The pathologist has given his evidence today and we have taken a date to cross-examine him, to ask him questions on his report. Until those questions are asked, you cannot say this is the outcome of the report. I employ everybody to have an open mind until we look at all the possibilities.”
