Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly told club’s chief Ed Woodward to sign one of Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic or Sampdoria centre- back Joachim Andersen in the January transfer window.

Mourinho is desperate to land a top central defender during the winter transfer after failing to sign any of his top targets in the last summer.

The Portuguese tactician believes the Red Devils have paid for their failure to sign quality defenders, having conceded 21 goals in 12 league matches so far this season.

Following his lack of defensive options the former Chelsea manager has stuck with Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof to lead the defense-line.

However, according to Metro UK, Mourinho lacks confidence in the duo, prompting him to seek for reinforcements in January.

United is understood to be ready to hand Mourinho significant funds and the 55-year-old has told Woodward to sign Milenkovic or Andersen.

Milenkovic signed for Fiorentina from Serbian side, Partizan Belgrade, in 2017 and the Serie A giants may not be ready to offload him.

On his part, Andersen is yet to earn a national call up from Denmark but has emerged as a growing talent in Italy since his move from Dutch side, Twente.

His consistency has attracted the interest of top European clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspurs.
