Fed Govt issues security advice against xenophobia attacks in South Africa

The Federal Government of South Africa has issued a security warning against another round of xenophobic attacks.

The warning follows a threat issued by a group in the former apartheid enclave.

Operation Dudula had threatened to attack foreign nationals living in Southern African countries.

In recent video clips, the group announced plans to march against foreign nationals in South Africa beginning next Thursday, September 2.

The advice was given by the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa in a statement made available to reporters yesterday by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja.

The advice was given by the High Commission in a letter titled “Advisory to Nigerians in South Africa,” written by its Consular Section and dated August 24.

Due to the threat of an attack, it advised Nigerians to be security-conscious, vigilant, and cautious in their daily activities.

“This is to advise Nigerians living in South Africa to be vigilant and cautious in their activities in light of recent statements by supporters of Operation Dudula and threats to attack foreign nationals in this country.”

“The group has informed of plans to march against foreign migrants in South Africa beginning September 2, 2022, and specifically on foreign business owners, shops, and undocumented foreign nationals, through public notice and video clips circulated on social media.”

The Nigerian High Commission advised Nigerian residents in South Africa to “exercise caution and be watchful in carrying out their day-to-day activities.”
