The federal government has stated that it is pursuing the establishment of micro Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants throughout communities in order to address rising Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices (LPG).

Dr Mohammed Ibrahim, Chairman of the Natural Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP), spoke at the 2022 Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

With the theme “LPG Sustainability and Current Issues,” Ibrahim stated that the Federal Government would make LPG more affordable.

“So we’re constructing micro LNG plants all over… We can build a 4,000 mmbtu LNG plant in any village with a flare site.

“We will open a micro LNG plant in Owazza, Abia, in the next 12 months,” he said.

Ibrahim stated that Nigeria had no business exporting LNG because the country had yet to address consumption and sector transformation.

He stated that the country’s LNG reserves were abundant in the Dahomy Basin, Niger Delta Basin, Bida Basin, Gondola Basin, and Chad Basin.

“Nigeria is a natural gas haven.” So, now that LNG is the transition fuel, there is an opportunity to use the resource to develop the country.”
