FG trains Ekiti farmers on alternative yam farming system

By Adeleye Kunle
Owing to farmer-herder clashes, the Federal Government has come up with an alternative yam farming system which involves the use of sacks.
To this end, farmers across the country are enjoined to key into the innovation towards ensuring food security in the country.
Minister of Agriculture Dr Muhammed Abubakar made this known in Ado Ekiti in the course of a training programme organized for some yam farmers across the 16 local government areas of the state.
Dr Abubakar who was represented by a senior official in the ministry, Dr Perpetua Iyere-Usiahon explained that such innovation is healthy, economical, tested and trusted.
The minister said that using sack bags for the production of yam was one of the strategies towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
He assured farmers across the country that President Buhari’s administration is committed# to food security and would do everything possible to prioritize the needs of farmers.
Dr Abubakar charged the beneficiaries to extend the knowledge gained during the training to other farmers in their local governments.
After the training, the farmers were given yam stems to test-run the innovation
