Following the Delta Governorship Candidate Scandal, protesters break into the PDP National Secretariat.
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports.
On August 9, 2022, a number of Sheriff Oborevwori’s supporters demonstrate in front of the Delta PDP’s national secretariat in Abuja.
In Abuja, the nation’s capital, demonstrators besieged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat on Tuesday.
The protest discusses the scandals surrounding Sheriff Oborevwori, the PDP candidate for governor in the general elections of 2023 and speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
On July 7, a Federal High Court in Abuja declared Sheriff Oborevwori ineligible due to alleged inconsistencies in his certifications.
A month after the verdict, Oberevwori’s supporters were numerous protesters with posters expressing their grievances. The enraged PDP members want a meeting in Wadata Plaza with the party’s leaders.
No journalists would be allowed to speak to the protesters, who chanted “no Sheriff, no PDP in Delta State,” until a member of the PDP National Working Committee arrived to address them.
In Delta State, the PDP is split between those who support the current speaker of the state parliament and David Edevbie, a former finance commissioner who came in second in the party’s primary for governor.
The PDP National Secretariat has witnessed a number of rallies since the judgment, both in support of and against the Speaker, despite Oberevwori’s challenge of the Federal High Court decision from July that disqualified him from the election.
At the PDP governorship primaries in May, Oborevwori received 590 votes, defeating Edevbie—who worked as James Ibori’s finance commissioner—by 113 votes.
While James Ibori is apparently backing Edevbie, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa prefers Oborevwori.
Edevbie, who was disappointed with the outcome of the primary, had filed a lawsuit, claiming mistakes in Oborevwori’s credentials.
