Governor Diri Advocates for Fallen Heroes’ Families with Endowment Fund Proposal
In commemorating the 2024 Armed Forces Day, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged all levels of government to establish an endowment fund to support the families of fallen heroes.
Represented by his deputy, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Governor Diri emphasized the necessity of addressing the challenges faced by widows, widowers, and families of servicemen who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s peace and security.

During the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, Senator Diri expressed that the annual event alone is insufficient to alleviate the suffering of the families left behind. He proposed the creation of a special fund dedicated to fallen heroes, aiming to provide ongoing support beyond the commemorative day.
Governor Diri called for automatic scholarships for the children of slain heroes and recommended that deserving Armed Forces personnel be considered for national honors, fostering motivation for continued patriotic service. He commended the security agencies for their professionalism during the state’s last year off-cycle governorship election and acknowledged their contributions to national peace and security.
Highlighting Bayelsa as one of the safest states due to the relentless efforts of security agencies, Senator Diri assured continued support from the state government. The ceremony included the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier, observed by dignitaries, and a moment of silence accompanied by a 21-gun salute to honor the fallen heroes.
