•••• A soft Reminder Of Dr. Chris Ekiyor Peace Building In the Niger Region As We Marks His Birthday Today.
There came a time when the Niger Delta was burning, agitations heightened, Oil installations threatened, communities sacked and the Federal Government/International Communities desperately in search of lasting peace to boost the dwindling revenue acruable from oil reserves. The demands from the people were that of better life for Niger Deltans and resource control to galvanize development of the region.
Things went out if control with so many casualties, marked hostilities in the region and intense arms struggle. It demanded a proactive approach from a proactive mind to put an end the age long crises.
What could be done? What steps could be taken to bring peace in the troubled region? These questions were far from being answered…
At this critical time, all Stakeholders were looking for a bridge builder to initiate the process that will lead to dialogue and peaceful resolution. Luckily, hope came at the right time.
Dr Chris Ekiyor, then as President of Ijaw Youth Council from 2007-2010 saw the future and keyed into the peace process of Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to reintegrate the agitators. These coordinated attempts led to the emergence of the Amnesty programme.
While putting his life on the line, he traversed the creeks to engage the militants to embrace nonviolence and convinced them to accept the disarmament programme. He worked tirelessly with the Federal Government/Ijaw Joint Committee on Road map to peace and FEHN to achieve disarmament and initiate the amnesty programme.

Coming from the basement membrane of Peace and unity, he has been pivotal in Peace initiatives and propagation of harmonious co-existence. The Amnesty programme which we have mentioned earlier and Integration Summit Group-Nigeria are a few of the testimonies to the true test of nationhood that runs in his veins.
Today, we celebrate him for standing tall for equal rights, Peace and attention to the health needs of rural communities.
