Ijaw National Congress Demands Apology from Wike Over Disrespectful Remarks

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and demand an apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments about Ijaw leaders and the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). The group accused Wike of repeatedly undermining and disrespecting their elders, warning that his behavior had reached an unacceptable level.

In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the INC expressed deep concern over Wike’s continued disregard for Ijaw leaders. They cited his recent media remarks, in which he allegedly insulted PANDEF, as an example of his consistent disrespect. The INC stated that many of the elders Wike spoke against were accomplished individuals long before he completed law school, making his comments particularly offensive.

The INC described Wike’s actions as characteristic of someone who does not respect anyone, but they emphasized that insulting an entire ethnic group was beyond acceptable. They called on President Tinubu, Wike’s employer, to take immediate action and ensure that he apologized to the Ijaw people and their leaders. The group warned that while they have exercised restraint, they will not continue to tolerate what they referred to as Wike’s “naked dance in public.”

The statement further urged Tinubu to make a clear choice between supporting the Ijaw people, who have backed his administration, and standing by Wike, whose actions have caused significant offense. The INC warned that failure to address the issue could lead to a withdrawal of their support for the president.

The INC also accused Wike of boasting that he enjoys Tinubu’s backing and can act without consequences. While the group expressed doubt about Wike’s claims, they stated that if the minister is not held accountable for his words, it would confirm that he indeed has the president’s support.

The Ijaw National Congress concluded by urging Tinubu to act swiftly before the situation escalates further.
