Ikpeazu cancels outrageous fees in ABSU
The management of Abia State University, Uturu, ABSU, has reverted to old school fees paid by students of the institution.
Recall that the University had, according to a pressure group, Mezie Abia, allegedly increased school fees from about N120,000 to N500,000.
The group alleged that the increase was a design by Prof Maxwell Onyemachi-led institution to deny poor students their rights to education.
But Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in his intervention, has ordered the immediate cancellation of the outrageous school fees regime introduced by the school management.
Ikpeazu, who gave the order through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka, said the geometric increase in fees was unacceptable to his administration, adding that the children of the poor must be given equal academic opportunities to access tertiary education.
Complying with the Ikpeazu directive, ABSU also issued a statement telling students to continue paying the old school fees until further notice.
The statement by Acho Elendu, the Registrar, read in part, “fees paid students of Abia State University remain the same until otherwise stated. Please be properly guided.”
