The President of the Ijaw Council Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, has expressed deep shock and sadness over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the ongoing political crisis. In a strongly-worded statement, Lokpobiri criticized the decision, calling it hasty and unfair, and questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s move to place the blame solely on Governor Siminalayi Fubara while overlooking the actions of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Lokpobiri argued that the declaration contradicts democratic principles and fails to offer an unbiased solution to the prolonged political conflict in the state. According to him, the decision appears to favor one side of the political divide, giving undue advantage to Wike despite his alleged role in escalating tensions.

He accused Wike of deliberately provoking a state of unrest to create conditions that would justify drastic measures like the state of emergency. Lokpobiri noted that Wike’s recent actions seemed calculated to instigate political turmoil and force a predetermined outcome that undermines democratic governance.

Furthermore, Lokpobiri questioned the timing of the Trans-Niger Pipeline explosion, which had been cited as a factor in the crisis. He suggested that the incident might not be directly linked to the political conflict and raised suspicions that Fubara’s opponents could have sabotaged the pipeline to strengthen the case for declaring a state of emergency.

Calling for a thorough investigation, Lokpobiri urged the National Assembly to scrutinize the president’s decision and ensure that the will of the people of Rivers State is respected. He praised Governor Fubara for his governance over the past two years, claiming that Fubara has prioritized the welfare of Rivers people throughout his tenure.

In response to the unfolding events, Lokpobiri announced his intention to consult with political leaders and key stakeholders to develop a response to what he termed a “grave injustice.” He reiterated his belief that Fubara would complete his term, despite what he described as political orchestrations aimed at undermining the governor.
