JAMB: 78% of Candidates Score Below 200

Nigeria’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the gateway to higher education in the country, has seen its 2024 results released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Over 1.94 million candidates from all corners of the country braved the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with their academic fates hanging in the balance. This exam was conducted in 118 towns and over 700 centres across the country.

The vast majority of registered candidates—1,904,189 out of a total of 1,989,668—took to their seats to face the challenge of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. From Friday, April 19, to Monday, April 29, these aspirants put pen to paper, determined to secure a foothold in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

According to the Education minister, only a tiny fraction of the candidates—a mere 0.4%—managed to score above 300 out of 400, signaling an underwhelming performance by the vast majority of participants. Of the 1,842,464 released results, a staggering 76% scored below 200, highlighting the substantial gap between expectations and reality.
