JUST-IN: Lawal Wins At S’ Court As Tinubu Holds Closed-Door Meeting With APC Govs

The Supreme Court has on Friday 12 January 2024 affirmed the election of the Governor of Zamfara state Dauda Lawal.
The lead judgment by Justice Emmanuel Agim held that the appellate court judgment was perverse in its decision and reversed the order for a rerun.
The panel found that the contention by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bello Matawalle, that the results as declared in favor of the governor in three local government areas of Birnin Magaji, Bukuyyum and Maradun was not correct, was not justified.
Justice Agim submitted that the apex court has consistently maintained that any party which disputes the result of an election must tender the correct results.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Lawal winner of the election, but Matawalle challenged his victory in court.
While the tribunal affirmed the governor’s election, the Appeal court sacked him.
In another development, report has it that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently in a closed-door meeting with governors elected under the All Progressives Congress.
The meeting which is presently being held at the Council Chamber of the State House has in attendance governors from Imo, Sokoto, Kwara, Benue, Kaduna, Cross River, Ogun, Borno, Ondo, Yobe, Kebbi, Jigawa, Kogi, Ekiti, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, whose election win was affirmed by the Supreme Court hours earlier
As at the time of filing in this report, reason for the meeting remains undisclosed.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is currently set to deliver judgment on the appeals filed by the governor of Plateau, others.
