Katsina State spends N5 billion to control erosion

Governor Aminu Bello Masari yesterday said Katsina State had expended about N5 billion to control erosion and construct drainages.
Masari said the project was to help check flooding and related environmental disaster which the state often witnessed during wet season.
He told visiting members of the North West Zone of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who were in the state to inspect some government projects, that his administration had embarked on several development projects in urban and rural areas.
Masari cited massive fencing of schools to protect the students and newly installed equipment at laboratories. According to him, the state government has budgeted about N14 million for the project.
Masari said efforts were being made to encourage enrolment of young girls into schools to help them prevent being given out in marriage at a tender age.
The Zonal Vice President of the NUJ, Yusuf Idris, commended the state government for the achievement recorded.
The inspection was carried out by officials of state-owned media outfits in the North west region.
