Killing Of Prominent Islamic Cleric: Police Impose Restriction Of Movement In Gombe

GOMBE – The Gombe State Police Command has imposed a restriction of move­ment in the state following the gruesome murder of a prominent Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Albani Kuri.

The popular scholar was al­legedly killed in the early hours of Wednesday (09/08/23) by yet-to-be-identified armed robbers in his residence located in Bobona, Tabra quarters, on the outskirts of Gombe, the State capital.

According to sources, four sus­pected robbers whose faces were covered with masks entered the house and requested for money from him but he resisted and was overpowered by the masked men who stabbed him severally with a knife and cutlass which resulted in his death.

The gruesome murder which attracted condemnation by Gover­nor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya and many well-meaning people of the State, is believed to have led the state Police Commissioner, Oqua Etim, to declare the restriction of movement from 12 midnight to 6 a.m.

The CP has equally directed that a thorough investigation be carried out on the circumstances surround­ing the incident.

ASP Mahid Muazu Abubakar, the CP directed all HODs, tactical commanders, and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the movement re­strictions across the state.

It said the measure is necessary to maintain law and order, ensure public safety, and curb the rising cases of criminal activities in the state.

“All residents are advised to co­operate with us and other security agencies and avoid unnecessary movements within the stipulated hours except those on essential ser­vices.

“The police command shall work in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure strict compliance with this directive. The public is urged to support this effort by re­porting any suspicious individual or group seen moving within the restricted hours to the nearest se­curity agency,” the statement reads.

Assuring the public of the com­mitment of the police to ensuring the safety and security of all resi­dents in the state, the command urged the public to remain vig­ilant, adding, “Together, we can make Gombe State a safe place for everyone.”
