Lagos Assembly Establishes Panel to Investigate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s N24 Billion Light Up Project
The Lagos State House of Assembly has formed a six-member committee to scrutinize the N24 billion Light Up project executed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, aims to ensure the provision of reliable energy to all residents.
During a plenary session on Monday, the Speaker of the House, Mojisola Meranda, appointed the committee members, including Abiodun Tobun, Desmond Elliot, Stephen Ogundipe, Abiodun Orekoya, Femi Saheed, and Sabur Oluwa.
Meranda emphasized the necessity of collective efforts to illuminate Lagos, highlighting the project’s importance, with a report anticipated within two weeks.
She further stated that the discussion sought to provide residents with street lighting, thereby enhancing safety and protecting lives and property throughout the state.
“This is the only way to mitigate the problem of insecurity; when areas are well-lit, you can discern who is approaching, determining if they pose a threat. This is the project’s objective,” Meranda remarked.
“It is also crucial at this juncture to educate local government chairmen that street lighting should be integral to any road contract awarded.
“They should be implemented concurrently, avoiding cost-cutting measures that lead to additional government expenses for road modifications post-construction.
“If we can manufacture transformers through the Ministry of Power, street lights and solar street lights should be among our basic provisions. Therefore, I believe all stakeholders must collaborate to illuminate Lagos.
“The production of street lighting is of paramount importance, and we should begin focusing on this to ensure it is resolved.”
She urged the state and local government areas to enhance their maintenance practices
