Lagos government and PSPs are considering a 50% increase in waste tariffs.
By Adeleye Kunle
In response to rising operating costs, the Lagos State Government and Private Sector Participant, PSP, operators may approve an upward tariff review of approximately 50% in waste bills, effective October 1, 2023.
Meanwhile, in the last year, 83 people have been convicted and jailed, over 1,200 have been penalized to sweep, and over 3,000 have been fined in Lagos for various types of offences relating to indiscriminate waste disposal.
Ibrahim Odumboni, Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, stated this while briefing reporters on the state of waste management, updates on activities from the beginning of 2022 until August, recent challenges, solutions, and sustainability measures implemented by the agency in the state.
“The fuel subsidy is in addition to the subsidies offered to PSP operators in areas where we have challenges,” Odumboni explained.
“We are giving them additional subsidies to share among all operators on whom we believe the impact is having a significant impact, so that they can continue to provide the level of service we expect.”
“Attitudinal change is one of the most difficult challenges we face in waste management, and I am confident that with the State’s and everyone’s help, we can make a significant difference.”
