The re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is currently engaged in a closed-door reconciliation meeting with 39 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda. The meeting, which began at 2:10 PM at the Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja, is aimed at resolving tensions and fostering unity among aggrieved members while charting a new course for the House.

This development comes amid speculation about Obasa’s future, with some sources now suggesting that he may withdraw his lawsuit against the Assembly and 33 lawmakers at the Ikeja Court. The lawsuit was filed after his removal as Speaker earlier this year.

On January 13, 2025, 33 out of 39 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and replaced him with his deputy, Mojisola Meranda. His removal triggered a leadership crisis within the Assembly, leading him to seek legal action. However, following interventions from the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at both the state and national levels, Obasa was re-elected as Speaker after Meranda stepped down. Notable figures, including Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba, played key roles in facilitating his reinstatement.

The internal crisis within the Assembly also created divisions within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the influential political body that guides leadership decisions in Lagos State. The situation prompted President Bola Tinubu to step in, urging party members to work toward a peaceful resolution.

With the ongoing reconciliation efforts, there are indications that the political tension within the House may ease, allowing lawmakers to refocus on governance and legislative duties. The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine whether Obasa will officially withdraw his lawsuit and fully restore unity among the lawmakers.
