Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to return to his former club, Crystal Palace, leaving only Diogo Dalot in the right-back position.
Dest, a former Ajax player, has been put up for sale by Barcelona, who are desperate for funds after spending so much this summer.
According to Sport, talks between Barcelona and United about Dest are already well underway.
According to reports, United made an initial bid of around £14.3 million, but Barcelona is holding out for slightly more.
Barcelona wants just under £17 million, and the two clubs have discussed the possibility of Dest going on loan to Old Trafford, with an option to buy.
