“May his death not be in vain,” Peter Obi laments the passing of Ayo Adebanjo.

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Ayo Adebanjo, the esteemed leader of the Afenifere Organisation.

Adebanjo departed in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2025, at the venerable age of 96, as disclosed by his family in an official statement.

In a poignant post shared on X, titled ‘A Life of Service, Justice, and Truth,’ Obi conveyed his shock upon receiving the news of Adebanjo’s demise.

Characterizing the Afenifere leader as a stalwart in the quest for a reimagined Nigeria, Obi implored both leaders and citizens to ensure that Adebanjo’s demise would not be in vain.

He extolled Adebanjo’s unwavering dedication to justice and his relentless pursuit of a better nation, which has etched an indelible legacy in Nigeria’s annals.

Obi reflected that his political journey has instilled in him a profound gratitude for all those whom providence has brought into his life, shaping his understanding of Nigeria.

“Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the quintessential Afenifere leader, stands out among them. I remain profoundly grateful for his support during my presidential campaign.

“His endorsement transcended mere political gesture, affirming his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness. He unwaveringly upheld his convictions, demonstrating his dedication to Nigeria’s greater good,” the former governor of Anambra State remarked.

Obi also recounted the lasting impact of the late Afenifere leader’s words during their last meeting.

He shared, “The last time I spoke with him, his words left an enduring impression: ‘Always stand on the path of justice.’ That counsel remains a guiding principle in my life, and I reaffirm my commitment to honoring it in his memory.”

“In my association with Pa Adebanjo, I have come to appreciate Nelson Mandela’s words: ‘I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.’”
