TrackNews Nigeria has learnt that a 33,000-litre tanker full to the brim with fuel crashed in Costain, Lagos while attempting to ascend a bridge on Tuesday.
Our correspondent says the occurrence was at about 2p.m. It leads to the spillage of its deposit but a fire outbreak was prevented by the urgent attention of some emergency responders.
Garba Yaukubu, an eyewitness who spoke with our correspondent told TrackNews Nigeria that the tanker was ascending the Costain Bridge inward Iponri, Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere, when it fell, adding that it hit a vehicle which follows tumbling.
In a telephone conversations, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, and Mrs. Adeseye Margaret, Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service both confirmed the incident.
Adeseye claimed that men of the fire service were on ground mitigating the situation while assuring public safety and counting on public support to do away with combustible materials within the environment.
When reached, the Permanent Secretary confirmed: “Upon arrival at the scene, LRT found a fallen tanker laden with 33,000 litres of PMS.
“Investigations revealed that the tanker, while ascending the bridge rolled back, hit a car then tumbled and spilled its contents.
“The LRT, alongside LASTMA, Police, state and federal fire and were joint responders on ground.
“The fire fighters are blanketing the spilled contents, while adequate safety measures have been put in place to avoid ignition of fire.”
“Trans-loading of the product into another tanker is ongoing.
“Members of the public are to avoid the area and refrain from scooping of product.
“Residents should avoid lighting any naked flame until the situation has been fully contained.”
