Most of the attendees rooted for Wike’s expulsion, but some feared that it may further divide the PDP and lead to an “ANPP” syndrome

Efforts to remove Nyesom Wike from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gaining momentum among loyalists of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

A meeting hosted by Atiku, attended by his loyalists, discussed the issue extensively.

While most attendees supported Wike’s expulsion, some were concerned about the potential division it could cause within the PDP.

There are fears that it could lead to a situation similar to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which experienced internal conflicts and eventually dissolved into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senior party members loyal to Wike have threatened to create a parallel PDP and cause a prolonged crisis if he is expelled.

The situation has been further complicated by Wike’s nomination for a ministerial position in the APC government by President Bola Tinubu.

This move is seen as the final straw by the Atiku group, following Wike’s previous support for Tinubu in the presidential election.

The PDP’s national working committee (NWC) is reportedly divided on the issue, with some members supporting Wike and others opposing Atiku.

There are also constitutional questions surrounding the authority of the “elders and stakeholders” who met with Atiku, as they do not hold official positions in the party.

TheCable previously reported that Atiku loyalists are also moving against the acting national chairman, Umar Ililya Damagum, over allegations of his association with Wike.

Atiku’s supporters have accused Damagum and Ahmadu Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa, of “hobnobbing” with Wike.

Despite these conflicts, some of Atiku’s proxies have reportedly reached out to Wike for assistance with the party’s election cases at tribunals across the country.
