The family of Sarah Ajesi, a mother of three who was killed by a vehicle learner on Irese Road in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has demanded justice and the prosecution of her killers.

Bolarinwa Ajesi, the deceased’s husband, was also seriously injured in the accident, which occurred around 4 p.m. on July 18.

The family, through their lawyer, lbukun Fasanmi, expressed dissatisfaction with the way the police handled the case, adding that the family desired justice and that the matter not be swept under the rug.

In a petition to Ondo State Police Commissioner, Fasanmi stated that the heinous death was caused by “a person learning how to drive a vehicle without a driving permit while using a white Sienna vehicle of Okeke Ugochuckwu Udoka registered as a commercial vehicle with number RBC 867 XD.”

“It also caused bodily harm to Bolarinwa Ajesi by recklessly and unlawfully using the road without lawful authorization with a Sienna bus in violation of the Road Traffic Act,” he continued.

“The heinous murder of the late Mrs. Sarah Ajesi by the trio of Okeke Ugochuckwu Udoka, Mr. Wale, and his woman-friend is tragic and requires a thorough investigation and prosecution.”

“By letter dated July 26, 2022, we have requested that the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State investigate the matter in order to review the lapses that have delayed proper investigation and prosecution of the matter.” The body is still in the morgue, awaiting justice.

“Mr and Mrs Ajesi had gone to work and were returning around 4pm on the 18th of July, 2022 when they were recklessly knocked down by a vehicle registered as a commercial van with number plate RBC 867 XD in the most dangerous manner anyone could imagine.”

“While Mr. Ajesi managed to regain his footing after a horrific fall, the woman behind the wheel of the aforementioned vehicle reversed and further crushed the late Mrs. Sarah Ajesi on the head in a most gruesome manner, resulting in her untimely death.”

“Though it is understood that two of the perpetrators, the woman who drove and the man tutoring her, are currently in police custody, we hereby demand the arrest and prosecution of Udoka Ogochuckwu Okeke, who gave out his car for such an illegal venture that resulted in the deceased’s untimely death.”

“Some people in authority are allegedly assisting this fellow in avoiding arrest and/or extending the investigation into him.”

“The specific errors and recklessness that resulted in our client’s wife’s death are as follows:The vehicle was not registered or dedicatedly inscribed as a vehicle set aside for learner or for driving lessons.” The driver lacked a learner’s permit.

“The tutor, known as Wale, had no such authorization to teach the learner on the highway with a commercial vehicle.”

“The vehicle’s owner is complicit in that he released his vehicle for such an illegal venture, contributing to and causing Sarah Ajesi’s death.”

“We hereby call on all parties involved to do the necessary and ensure that justice is served in this matter in order to avoid protests against the police’s handling of this case.”

When contacted, Ondo State Police Command spokesman Funmi Odunlami confirmed the incident and stated that the case could not be swept under the rug.

“There’s nothing quite like sweeping the case under the rug.” If the lawyer has written to the CP, he can check to see if the letter has been treated by coming to my office. We will do our best in this matter.”
