Mbazulike Amechi reveals Some Governors preventing Buhari from releasing Nnamdi Kanu

Mbazulike Amechi, an elder statesman and First Republic Aviation Minister, stated yesterday that if it had been up to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, would have been released and the pro-Biafra group’s disagreement with his government would have been resolved politically.

Amechi, on the other hand, claimed that a cabal of non-Igbo and some Igbo politicians, as well as a specific Governor, are profiting from the disagreement and crisis in the southeast and have allegedly blocked all correspondence he sent to the President for a resolution.

Amechi also stated that President Buhari, whom he said has a lot of respect for him and personally demonstrated it when he and some Igbo leaders met him in Abuja for a political solution to Mazi Kanu’s matter, has been fed lies about Mazi Kanu and the agreement the Igbo leaders reached about the matter, adding that a specific South East Governor personally told him (Amechi) that

During a press conference, Amechi stated that the security crisis in the southeast began with Mazi Kanu’s arrest and rendition and will end with his release, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore the advice of some enemies of Ndigbo and disgruntled Igbo politicians who are feeding him lies about the IPOB leader and Igbo elders who initiated the peace meeting with him.

“On November 18, 2021, at the age of 93, I traveled to Abuja with some other Igbo leaders and a Bishop relation of Mazi Kanu to beg the President to release Nnamdi Kanu to me and to begin dialogue to find a solution to the problem,” Amechi said.

“The President listened carefully to me, set aside a response that they had written for him, and expressed his thoughts to me.” He assured me, and I believed him, that he would look into the matter for my benefit. The Presidency arranged for me to go to Nnamdi Kanu’s detention facility and obtain assurances from him. This I did in collaboration with Nnamdi’s cousin, Bishop Onuoha, and his lawyer.

“We reached an agreement with Nnamdi Kanu that could have pleased the government and Ndigbo, and I forwarded a copy to the President via DHL Mail with proof of delivery on December 6, 2021.” That was my last communication with the White House, but I doubt they gave the President a copy of the mail I forwarded to him. I doubt they even allowed him to see it.

“About a year ago, the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum called me and said he went to the President and asked him about my case, and the President told him that the ball was at my feet (Mbazuliki Amechi’s feet).” The Governor informed me that he had scheduled a meeting with the Federation’s Attorney-General, myself, and Nnamdi’s lawyer. At my age, I went to the trouble and expense of traveling to Abuja. After dribbling me and the lawyer, the Governor arrived a day late and informed us that the Attorney-General had traveled and asked me to return the following week. After three days in a hotel with my aides, I had to return home.

“There is a simple solution to the insecurity in the southeast if only the authorities and those who benefit from the situation will listen.” A fly isn’t caught with vinegar; it’s caught with honey or something tasty. Peace is never won with a gun; it is won through dialogue, understanding, and give and take.

“The insecurity or crisis in the southeast today cannot be greater than the crisis in the Delta area a few years ago, but after the guns and gunboat failed, former President Yar’Adua convened a round table conference, and today, everybody is happy and the area continues to lay our golden egg.”

I assure Mr. President that if Nnamdi Kanu comes to quarantine with me for counsel, admonition, reorientation, and father-son talk within four to seven days of his release, all guns in the southeast will go silent, with the exception of guns at festivals and funerals.

“As I lie in my bed, meditating and navigating the calm sea of 94 years, tears stream down my cheeks as I realize that my President, a man who has so much regard and respect for me, will be diverted not to trust me and grant me the one single request I made in my capacity as the only surviving co-founder of this great federation.””
