The Adamawa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the alleged battering of its female member, Nafeesa Vandi, TrackNews reports

According to a statement obtained on Wednesday and signed by the council chairman, Donald Dedan, and Secretary, Fidelis Jocthtan, Nafeesa, a staff member of Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Yola, was beaten beyond recognition by her alleged husband, Mallam Ibrahim Aliyu.

According to the TrackNews, although Nafessah has children with Ibrahim, they have long separated and live apart, despite not being legally divorced.

The estranged husband allegedly pounced on her after noticing her exiting the car of a man who had given her a ride.

The NUJ described the heinous act as “unacceptable, wicked, and barbaric,” adding that “beating such a professional female practising journalist to a stupor by her alleged husband Mallam Ibrahim Aliyu, a sacked staff of PHCN,” was barbaric.

It went on to say that, while the police had already swung into action by investigating and arresting the perpetrator of the domestic violence, it expected swift action toward Ibrahim Aliyu’s prosecution in accordance with existing laws.

The union urged national and international organizations such as FIDA and UNFPA, which advocate for an end to violence against women, to intervene in order for justice to prevail.
