Residents are being arrested by a Lagos government agency for failing to pay their waste bills.

Residents of Akowonjo’s Oluwalogbon, Oke, Ajani Akingbogun, Benesther, Kwara, Vincent, and Ogo Oluwa streets in Lagos State’s Alimosho Local Government Area have complained about men from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps allegedly invading their homes.

LAGESC is an enforcement agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Because the Lagos Waste Management Authority/Private Sector Participant bills had not been paid, the houses were raided.

On Tuesday, our correspondent saw the agency bring Black Maria trucks to Ajani Akingbogun Street and arrest some residents.

A nursing mother of a nine-month-old baby was also allegedly arrested.

“Many houses like ours also owe PSP fees,” said Omoniyi Ronke, a Benesther resident. Is this why they have to smash our doors like this? If we owe them money, even power companies will not do this.”

Bisayo Rukayat, another Kwara Street resident, claimed that officials ignored residents’ requests for more time to pay their bills.

“Imagine, they just broke down doors, arrested mothers, fathers, and even teenagers, and put them in Black Marias brought to Vincent Street,” she said.

“We’re Nigerians; we didn’t do anything wrong.” The government is attacking us over PSP funds, which is not good.”
