Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has insisted that the sum of N30,000 is not enough to satisfy the needs of a Nigerian worker.

Umahi made the statement when condemning a reported claim by the minister of labour, Chris Ngige, that the sum of N30,000 was enough for a family of four, the Tribune reports.

The governor who asked the minister to disclose how much he spends on recharging his phone, called on the federal government to review the revenue sharing formula in such a way that workers and other arms of government could benefit.

“It is my desire as the leader of this state to improve on the welfare of workers, but something must be done at the centre. Every right thinking man will support the workers,” Umahi said.

“I have even said that N30,000 is not enough and somebody at the national said N30,000 is enough for a family of four. I ask the person how much do you recharge your phone?

“To enable states to take care of workers at all level, we advocate the review of the sharing formula and get NNPC to be transparent and accountable.

“This will help quite a lot because we believe that if we are to put all the resources in a very transparent manner, together, we will be able to take care of workers including all the arms of government.”

Meanwhile, the federal government said on Thursday, November 8, that the increasing number of unemployed youths in the countryposes a great threat to the nation’s security and socioeconomic development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olusade Adesola, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, said this at a multi-stakeholder meeting on the ‘Nigerian youth employment action plan and global initiative on decent jobs for youths’ in Abuja.

The report said the programme was organised by the Sports Enterprise and Promotion Department of the Ministry, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
