Nigeria climbs 16 spots to 123rd in the global gender gap index.

Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports.
In the 2022 global gender gap index, Nigeria was ranked 123rd out of 146 countries, up 16 spots from 139th out of 156 countries in 2021.
The global gender gap index ranks countries based on their access to resources and opportunities.
According to the World Economic Forum’s ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2022,’ Nigeria ranks 123rd on average but 50th in terms of economic participation.
Nigeria is ranked 141st in the world for political participation, 70th for health and survival, and 134th for educational attainment.
Nigeria is ranked 27th in Sub-Saharan Africa. “Achieving full gender parity will take more than 100 years,” according to the report.
“The global gender gap will have shrunk by 68.1 percent by 2022.” According to the report, “at the current rate of progress, it will take 132 years to achieve full parity.”
“This is a four-year improvement over the estimate for 2021.” (136 years to parity).
“However, it does not compensate for the generational loss that occurred between 2020 and 2021: based on trends prior to 2020, the gender gap was expected to close within 100 years.”
“Sub-Saharan Africa has the sixth-highest regional score and has closed 67.9 percent of its gender gap,” according to the report. It is ranked higher than the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
