Nigerian Female Grapplers Achieve Historic Clean Sweep At African Games
Nigerian female wrestlers dominated the mats at the African Games, on Sunday, claiming all six gold medals across the weight categories. The remarkable clean sweep cemented Nigeria’s continental wrestling prowess.
In the 50kg event, Mercy Genesis kicked off the gold rush with a resounding 7-0 victory over Egypt’s Mohamed Nada. Genesis set her first name aside and showed no mercy against her opponent en route to Nigeria’s first wrestling gold.
The victory of Genesis was the start Nigeria needed because, Christiana Ogunsanya, not to be outdone, followed it with another masterclass, pummeling Cote D’Ivoire’s Nogona Bakayoko 11-0 to secure top honours in the 53kg division.

The triumphs kept rolling as Adekuoroye Odunayo (57kg), Kolawole Omolayo (62kg), Blessing Oburududu (68kg) and Rueben Hannah Amuchechi (76kg) all reigned supreme in their respective weight classes.
With the Nigerian wrestling juggernaut well and truly rolling, the nation has swept the women’s wrestling gold medals, underlining its dominance on the African wrestling scene.
