Nigerian Universities to Implement Anthology Blackboard Hybrid Learning by 2025

The Federal Government has directed all Nigerian universities to adopt Anthology Blackboard, a hybrid learning technology, by the end of 2025. The directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Mr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with vice-chancellors in Abuja.

Anthology Blackboard is a digital learning platform that combines in-person and online teaching methods, enabling institutions to offer flexible learning experiences. The initiative aims to modernize Nigeria’s higher education system, enhance accessibility, and improve the overall learning process for students across the country.

During the meeting, Mr. Alausa emphasized the importance of integrating technology into the academic environment, stating that the adoption of Anthology Blackboard aligns with global trends in education. He highlighted that this shift would help Nigerian universities keep pace with technological advancements while addressing challenges related to overcrowded classrooms and limited access to educational resources.

Vice-chancellors were urged to begin the necessary preparations to implement the platform, including training staff, upgrading infrastructure, and ensuring that students are equipped to adapt to the new learning model. The Minister assured universities of the government’s support in facilitating a smooth transition, promising resources and technical assistance where needed.

Reactions from university administrators have been mixed. Some welcomed the initiative as a much-needed step toward educational reform, while others expressed concerns about the readiness of institutions to adopt the technology within the given timeframe. Challenges such as internet connectivity, funding, and digital literacy among students and lecturers were highlighted as potential obstacles.

Nonetheless, the government remains optimistic that with proper planning and collaboration, the integration of Anthology Blackboard will enhance learning outcomes and prepare Nigerian students to compete on a global stage. The Ministry of Education plans to monitor progress closely and offer guidance to institutions throughout the process.

The deadline for full implementation is set for December 2025, marking a significant push toward digital transformation in Nigeria’s higher education landscape. Further meetings and workshops are expected in the coming months to address concerns and support universities in meeting this goal.
