The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has held a lecture event to mark the 50th anniversary of the scheme in the country, with an urgent call for rehabilitation of its permanent site in Abia State.

The call was made by Dr Gift Candida, the Assistant Director, Human Resources of Abia NYSC office, while delivering the lecture titled “Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Development”.

She appealed to the Abia State Government, corporate bodies and able individuals in the State to assist the NYSC in the provision of needed infrastructure in the permanent site and Umunna, Bende LGA and NYSC State office in Umuahia.

She lamented that many employers found it hard to pay corps members’ allowances or provide accommodation for them.

She listed some of the achievements of NYSC in the country to include agricultural and educational development, healthcare delivery, unity, skills acquisition and sanitation of host areas.

In her own address, Abia State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Dick Ufuoma-Iruenabere, complained about decaying infrastructure at the scheme’s permanent site in Umunna Bende LGA, which she said has been under erosion menace.
