Okorocha Shuns EFCC, Refuse To Appear In Court Over N2.9bn Corruption Charge
Former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha’s N2.9bn corruption charge trial has suffered a delay as the senator has refused to appear in court on Tuesday, February 22.
The senator was not only absent but was also not represented by any legal counsel.
The six other defendants who were charged alongside him were present in court with their lawyers.
The counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Cosmos Ugwu told the presiding judge, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo that Okorocha’s security detail was making it hard for court officials to serve him in person, maintaining that the politician was using this method to evade the law.
He said: “My, Lord, the business of today is ordinarily for arraignment but it’s regrettable that all efforts on our part to serve the first defendant, Rochas Okorocha have proved abortive.
“The security around him has not been helpful and I wish to apply for an adjournment to enable us serve him and then, arraign him.”
The judge adjourned the case to March 28 to give the EFCC time to serve him with the charge and take his plea.
