OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR OF BAYELSA STATE.

His Excellency,
Senator Douye Diri,
The Executive Governor,
Bayelsa State,
Creek Haven
Yenagoa.

Your Excellency Sir, I understand you are doing the best you can to ensure the state stays safe from this very rampaging Covid19. I appreciate your efforts, even as we have recorded one case.

However, I write to draw your attention to an ongoing trend in our dear state. As I write, we still have commercial and private vehicles lifting and bringing people back from different towns in the neighbouring states of Rivers, Delta, Cross Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and several other towns in the country. This portends danger to our dear state, should these people freely mingle with others in the state, thus increasing the possibility of more outbreaks of the virus infection in the state. Their actions of moving around while they ought to be in their places of residence before the outbreak and lockdown is against the government policies of ‘stay at home and stay safe’.

I equally gathered from a reliable source that transport companies have been bringing people from neighbouring states to Bayelsa at night.

I therefore ask Mr Governor, to take a more drastic step aimed at stopping the infiltration of people into our state. My kind opinion Your Excellency Sir, please set up a task force to stop the entrance of commercial and private vehicles into Bayelsa State. The Nigeria Police are doing their best, but as that does not seem to completely handle the matter, either because they are overwhelmed or otherwise, the task force would complement their efforts and put an end to the ugly and dangerous situation.

The only group that should be allowed entry (which I believe has been given some preference) is that handling food items and medications. Even they should be given the utmost attention with regards to compliance to social distancing and self sanitisation.

Our Miracle Governor, as you know Sir, the existence alone of this virus in our midst is a threat to our common existence as a people. We can not afford to experience it. That is why the need to do anything to stop it is urgent, no matter how inconveniencing that can be.

We await your steps Sir, hopefully we shall overcome soon.

Long live the people of Bayelsa State.
