Osun APC members seek reorganization and the party leader’s removal.
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports.
Several All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Osun State planned a protest march yesterday in response to the party’s loss in the July 16 governorship election and to demand that the organization be restructured.
The Osun State APC chapter, in response to the protest, condemned the protest Mr. Rauf Aregbesola’s supporters planned against the party’s state leadership and the Gboyega Oyetola administration.
Additionally, the APC members sought the removal of Prince Gboyega Famodun, the party’s state chairman, claiming that he had mismanaged the group and was to blame for its electoral defeats.
The Famodun-led party, according to the party members who came from the state’s 30 local government areas and assembled in Osogbo, is a “truck with flat tyres” and will not be able to win the general election in 2023.
APC members carried signs during the protest that included the phrases “Osun APC Needs Restructuring,” “Famodun Must Go,” and other similar phrases. There is no life in Osun APC again, “2023: Asiwaju May Lose Osun with Famod,” “Sack Famodun, Aregbesola Is The Soul Of APC/Progressive Politics In Osun,” and “Save Osun APC From Total Collapse”
While chanting political songs, APC members marched through the heavily guarded neighborhoods of Odi-Olowo, Olaiya, and Ogo-Oluwa carrying a letter to Hon. Timothy Owoeye, Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
The protesting party members were unable to enter the APC state secretariat at Ogo-Oluwa, Osogbo, to meet with available party leaders because the gate was sealed and there were some armed political hoodlums stationed inside.
In order to be strong and united before the 2018 general election, Abosede Oluwaseun, a well-known APC member, claimed the party needed to be reorganized from the level of units, wards, and local governments to that of states.
With careful, serious, and unbiased analysis of the governorship election results, Oluwaseun continued, “we discovered that the electoral defeat is not only self-induced by the party’s administration, but it also represents party issues that had lately been raised by worried minds.
“We felt compelled to inform you as concerned progressives that it is risky to approach the 2023 general election with the same paper-tiger party led by Prince Gboyega Famodun, the APC’s state chairman. Unresolved internal party conflicts, however, prevented our party from winning the election.
The state party chairman, Famodun, and Governor Oyetola have blatantly mismanaged the party, to put the problems in their most basic terms. The results of the governorship election on July 16 confirm that the chairman has categorically demonstrated that he is incapable of leading the party.
The APC degenerated and adopted the perilous habit of having factions under the leadership of both Governor Oyetola and Famodun, which later led to tragedy and sorrow. Oyetola made a move that divided the celebration in two, which put a damper on it.
As the leader of a ruling party that was vying for power, Famodun didn’t believe it was critical to handle the conflicts and crises that dotted all the local government areas in the state. Before the governorship election, there was no consensus, teamwork, party cohesion, or togetherness.
In order to address this growing clear and present danger, Oluwaseun said, “We definitely state the following demands: “The disintegration of all party organizations, from the local to the national levels. the appointment of a fair caretaker committee to oversee the party’s restructuring and restore it to its former status as a winning electoral machine.
“Composition of an inclusive party executive structure from the ward level to the state level within 90 days; and inclusive redistributing of the state and federal legislative tickets to reflect real membership structure and preferences.
In the statement, it is stated that “this, in our humble opinion, is the way out of the APC’s current deadlock, and unless we swiftly take these moves, we stand the significant risk of suffering worse outcomes in the upcoming elections.”
The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Timothy Owoeye, addressed the demonstrators and assured party members that the necessary measures would be taken to maintain the party’s power and unity.
We will make every effort to maintain our party’s strength and cohesion in order to continue to reign and win elections in the future, Owoeye assured the crowd.
Therefore, the protest was dishonorable, callous, primitive, selfish, wicked, misplaced, and inconsiderate for the Aregbesola supporters who obviously worked against Governor Oyetola’s election victory to now be canvassing party restructuring through a sponsored protest, according to the state party chairman Famodun, who issued a statement through his media adviser Kola Olabisi in Osogbo yesterday.
“When I first heard that Aregbesola’s supporters were protesting, I thought that my recollection was faulty since they are unable to evade the APC’s current problems in Osun State.
Assuming, but not denying, that there are problems within the party, protesters ought to be made aware that they lack the moral authority to make suggestions for or carry out any likely solutions because it is well known that they took part in a significant and organized campaign against Oyetola, the APC governorship candidate, in the just-concluded election in response to their threat.
One would have thought that their enthusiastically cast their support for Senator Ademola Adeleke’s country home in Ede would be the perfect place for them to canvass for any party’s reorganization.
